Semaglutide has generated a lot of buzz lately. Originally approved for managing type 2 diabetes, semaglutide has shown remarkable results as a potent tool for combating obesity. Does it work? Is it safe? We’ll do our best to answer your questions.
Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the intestine in response to food intake. It plays an important role in regulating blood sugar levels and metabolism. A GLP-1 receptor agonist, such as semaglutide, mimics the action of GLP-1 to regulate appetite and blood glucose levels. It’s also designed to last longer in the body than natural GLP-1.
As discussed, GLP-1 receptor agonists can be used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, their positive impact extends beyond these conditions. GLP-1 receptor agonists have also been found to have beneficial effects on the heart and blood vessels, and studies are being done to see if they are a potential therapy for other conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in both of the brand name medications Ozempic and Wegovy. The main difference between Ozempic and Wegovy is their approved usage and dosage. While both medications contain semaglutide, they have received FDA approval for different purposes. Ozempic is approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is specifically approved for weight management. Wegovy is also typically prescribed at a higher dosage than Ozempic.
Qyral’s formulation contains semaglutide, but it is not Ozempic or Wegovy. Semaglutide is not available as a generic drug because it is under patent. However, pharmacies are able to compound semaglutide with ingredients such as carnitine or cyanocobalamin to create a formulation that is more cost effective while potentially boosting the effectiveness of the drug. Carnitine is an amino acid in all of our cells that is a critical part of energy production. Cyanocobalamin is a form of vitamin B12 that’s important for cellular growth and reproduction as well as protein and tissue synthesis. Along with semaglutide, they can work as potent fat burners.
Qyral's semaglutide comes as a liquid that needs to be refrigerated. It’s injected once a week. The dosage of Qyral's semaglutide increases over time as part of a gradual process to optimize its effectiveness and minimize potential side effects.
As with all medications, semaglutide has some known side effects. The common ones include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Constipation
There are people who should avoid semaglutide altogether. If you have any of the following, you are not a good candidate for the medication:
If you’ve had or have a family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
People with type 1 diabetes.
History of chronic pancreatitis or pancreatitis from taking weight loss medications.
History of GI disease.
Current gallbladder problems (though if you’ve had a removal, you are okay unless you have any of the other issues we’ve listed).
Bariatric surgery less than 6 months ago.
Patients should talk to their healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of semaglutide before starting treatment.
Semaglutide is typically administered as a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection once a week. While there’s a good chance that you’ve never given yourself an injection, it’s relatively easy to do and painless for most people. If you’re prescribed the medication, we have a preparation video as well as an instructional video that explains how to do your own injection. If you need guidance, our healthcare providers are happy to help.
Semaglutide represents a significant breakthrough in the treatment of obesity. Its ability to promote substantial and sustainable weight loss, coupled with its potential benefits for metabolic health, makes it an exciting option for individuals struggling with obesity. That said, semaglutide is not for everyone, and is not meant to be a stand-alone solution for weight loss. Patients who use semaglutide should also make appropriate lifestyle changes by following a healthy diet and exercise program. As with any prescription medication, semaglutide should be used only under the guidance of a medical professional. If you are prescribed semaglutide, always double check your dosage before injecting it. Make sure to follow your doctor's orders on the dosage, as using a higher dosage than prescribed can cause negative side effects and won't necessarily lead to faster or easier weight loss.
As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor or the Qyral team with any questions or concerns!
